These small, capped steel pins—commonly called shear studs—are welded to the top flange of the steel beam. This locks the concrete slab to the steel. As a result, the steel and concrete work together to form a stiffer and stronger structural element.

Basic Principle

In composite flooring, loads attempt to cause the concrete to slide relative to the steel beam. This is called horizontal shear. Shear studs prevent this sliding. Each stud has a shank and a mushroom-shaped head. The shank transfers the shear force between the steel and the concrete. The head, meanwhile, prevents the concrete from separating. When a sufficient number of studs are placed at the correct intervals, the slab and beam work together. This arrangement increases bending strength and stiffness without adding significant weight.

How Is Installation Performed?

Shear studs are typically installed using a welding method. An electric arc heats the base of the stud and the beam head. The stud base and the beam are held together until they fuse—until they solidify. This creates a 360° weld seam. In structures using trapezoidal sheet metal, the studs are typically welded through the trapezoidal profile. The trapezoidal sheet serves as a permanent formwork for the concrete. Ceramic rings are used during welding and removed after the process. For quality control, the weld bead is visually inspected, and bending tests are performed on sample studs.

In the video below, you can see how the welding machine and the shear stud are used. Shear studs connect steel beams to reinforced concrete slabs. This method reduces deflection and vibration and decreases the amount of steel required for construction. Trapezoidal sheet metal top shear studs are most commonly used in Shopping Malls, Factories, Parking Garages, Warehouses, and Military Construction projects.

Bridge decks: The composite effect between steel beams and concrete decks increases capacity and stiffness. As Atos Forming, we have contributed to two different projects in Uzbekistan and Libya, in addition to Turkey, using our 22 mm and 25 mm shear studs.

Puncture shear reinforcement: Headed nails used around columns provide protection against puncture shear. They serve a different purpose but are based on the same principle.

Why Is It Important?

More capacity, less steel: Composite beams can carry higher moments. This allows for the use of smaller cross-sections or wider beam spans.
Service performance: Increased stiffness reduces deflection and vibration. This is important for laboratories, offices, and equipment-intensive areas.
Ease of construction: Welding over the deck is fast and compatible with modern steel fabrication processes.

Design and Detailing

Quantity and spacing: The required number of shear studs is determined based on the shear force to be transferred between the beam and the slab. More studs are used in areas where higher loads are anticipated, while fewer are used in areas expected to carry relatively lighter loads.
Diameter and height: The diameter is typically between 13 and 25 mm. The height is determined based on the concrete to be poured over the shear stud.

Fire and corrosion: Studs are typically protected by concrete. Coating or fire protection is required for nails left exposed.

Important Considerations During Welding

Surface preparation: The surface to be welded must be clean. Any paint or galvanized coating must be removed.

Environmental conditions: Welding should not be performed on wet surfaces or in extremely cold conditions.
Quality control: The weld bead must be complete and uniform. A bending test must be performed on sample rivets.

Conclusion

Shear studs are small but effective. They ensure that the concrete slab and steel beam work together. This results in stronger and stiffer structures. From high-rise buildings to bridges, these simple components make a significant contribution to many structures.

More Information

At ATOS Forming, we produce 150,000 shear studs per month in compliance with TS EN ISO 13918 standards.
